Antidote to Selfishness

Turn my heart toward your statutes
and not toward selfish gain.
Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
preserve my life according to your word.
Psalm 119:36-37 NIV

Read Philippians 2:1-4

A selfish individual is entirely concerned with his or her own desires, needs, and wants. Selfishness can be the source of our issues in our families and other close relationships. The psalmist’s antidote to selfishness is the Word of God. Perhaps the psalmist understood that the things of this world—fame, money, career, and so on—will always distract us in this life. It’s challenging to walk in Jesus’ footsteps as a follower. Without God, we are all prone to slipping into the enemy’s traps. We must always put on God’s armor, one of which is the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word. A heart bent toward God’s word would help him be content with what God provides.

In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul also said, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Instead of being selfish, let us keep the unity by having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.

Lord, turn my heart toward your statues.
