Comforted - Daily Devotion

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. - Matthew 5:4

The Beatitudes, from Latin word which means blessed or happy, are Jesus’ short statements which summarizes his Sermon on the Mount. All of them begin with “blessed are…” In this context, blessing refers to a declaration of what is good and why it is good. However, it does not imply that the person who has been blessed will be satisfied.

One that I am very familiar by heart and through experience is the second beatitude which says, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted (Matthew 5:4). It sounds ironic how can someone be called blessed if they are mourning. Mourning itself means sadness or misery. It is not obvious on the said scripture how can you call yourself blessed while in a season of grieving.

Jesus wants us to understand that mourning is not equivalent to hopelessness. Psalm 30:5 says, “Weeping may endure for a night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.” In our weakest moment, we can be vulnerable to God. We are allowing God to embrace us and comfort us when we are most vulnerable to Him. Those who mourn who are in Christ will be comforted by God here on earth and will be free from mourning for eternity. As what is said in Psalm 30:11, “You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy…”

We can cry out to God.
