A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones — Proverbs 17:22
The Bible has many accounts of both men and women who dealt with misery and times of despair. Jonah was furious with God and wished to end his life. Hanna wept because her womb had stayed closed for many years. Hagar wept in the desert as her kid was going to die. Moses begged God to end his life. Yes, these God-fearing people we read about in the Bible, like you and me, were prone to having a crushed spirit. These people experienced despair for a variety of causes, yet they all trusted in one great God, who also revealed Himself to them personally during their difficult times.
Do you agree that having a happy heart is healthy for the body? We’ve all heard that laughter is the best medicine. Our only genuine joy comes from God. Psalm 16:8–9, 11 says, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” If you feel like the weight of your despair and anxiety is already crushing your bones, allow God to carry all the burdens you are carrying. He is ready and able to help you because He loves you. He will go to great lengths to mend things that are crushed and shattered in spirit. God’s Word says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
God is with you.
