Even Demons Believe in God

When Jesus started his ministry, the demons already know he is the Son of God, even though he has not publicly defined his identity yet. In Mark 1, when Jesus drives out an impure spirit from a possessed man in the synagogue, the demon said, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God (Mark 1:24)!”

Jesus casts them out, and they obey his commands. The demons know he is more powerful than they are. Why? Because they know Jesus is stronger than Satan and that he can defeat Satan and his demons. This truth can give us confidence and power over evil. Satan can keep us focused on the worldly things, on our emotions, and on selfish desires—traps that keep us far from our way to heaven. But we have the power of the Holy Spirit in us to say no to sin and yes to God!
