Fish with a Four Drachma Coin

....go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four drachma coin.

Matthew 17:27

Read Matthew 17:24-27

How I wish to have money is as easy as what Jesus instructed Peter to do. Unnatural as this might sound, but this miracle of the four drachma coin on a fish only shows how God mysteriously moves in unexpected ways.

The collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter to ask if Jesus also pays the tribute. This kind of tax is paid for the use of the house of God. Jesus said that as a Son of God, he is free from the obligation of paying the tribute to His own Father. But since Jesus doesn’t want them to cause any offense, He instructed Peter to the lake with a line and a hook and told him that he should find the required amount to cover their temple taxes inside the mouth of the first fish he will catch.

How did Jesus know that one of the fishes of the lake has drachma coins in its mouth? What happened is not a coincidence. This is a very surprising and unforeseen illustration of the Lord’s power and divine providence! God can even use a fish and direct it to Peter’s hook.

God knows your needs. The question is, are you dependent on God’s providence?

Lord, help me to rest confidently in your divine providence.
