Follow me, Jesus said to him. - Luke 5:27
Tax collectors in Jesus’ time were despised as traitors and thieves. They stole from their poor neighbors to live a life of luxury. Jesus changed the heart of Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector in Jericho, who surrendered to God’s mercy and “got right” with the Lord and his neighbors.
Likewise, the two words, “Follow me” were all that Levi (Mathew) needed as an invitation to surrender to God’s way and leave behind his errant ways of life. For both men, Jesus’ loving invitation moved them to repent of their sins and surrender to His love and mercy.
In spiritual life, surrendering to God does not mean giving up-it means walking the path of holiness. It means doing what Jesus did: placing ourselves in the hands of our loving Father and lead with His love.
And surrender to God’s love...
