God is Immanent

‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

Acts 17:28

Read Acts 17:24-28

Even though God is transcendent, He is not a distant God. He is above and beyond His creation in every way while being present within His creation at the same time. God’s attributes of transcendence and immanence make Him unique among all the other gods the man created. The Gospel Coalition, in an essay by John M. Frame, beautifully defined these attributes and said, “Divine transcendence and immanence are the related Christian doctrines that while God is exalted in his royal dignity and exercises both control and authority in his creation (transcendence), he is, by virtue of this control and authority, very present to his creation, especially his people, in a personal and intimate way (immanence).”

Acts 17 says God is not far from each one of us, for in him we live and move and have our being. In a lot of scriptures, God also says He is with us (Haggai 2:4, Joshua 1:9, Isaiah 41:10, Deuteronomy 31:6). God has an indwelling presence in the entire universe. He is personally involved in our in-working and out-working. God rested on the seventh day after finishing His work, but it does not mean that He just relaxed and observed us from afar. He is always at hand and moving in the lives of all mankind and other creation, whether or not we see it, whether or not we like it.

May this truth about who God is will be an encouragement for us that God is present and actively taking part in our life because He cares for us and He loves us.

God is present. He knows, He hears, He cares.
