But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength… - 2 Timothy 4:17
Daily devotional bible reading: 2 Timothy 4:9-13
As a single mother, there were many times when I felt lonely. I know God is close by and with me, but that won’t stop the enemy from telling lies to me. One of his lies is that I am raising my daughter solely on my own.
Second Timothy is a very personal letter from Paul to Timothy, a dear friend. Several people deserted him while he was imprisoned in Rome. Paul is convinced that he will die soon as he writes the letter. Despite his circumstances, he remembers Timothy and other Christian brothers. Paul encourages Timothy to remain firm and invites him to pay a last visit.
Paul understands where his strength comes from. In his letter, he stated unequivocally that the Lord stood by his side and gave him strength so that he could proclaim the message to all Gentiles. He is confident that the Lord will deliver him from every evil attack and safely transport him to his heavenly kingdom (vv. 17-18).
Let us remember that even in the face of overwhelming odds, God would never abandon us. To believe that nothing can separate us from God takes faith. God will fulfill His purpose in us, and He will provide us with everything we need to stay strong. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Jesus Christ, the Immanuel, means “God with us.” According to a commentary, this title of Jesus refers to both His deity (God with us) and His identification and nearness to man (God with us).
God is with us.
