Golden Crown That Will Last Forever - Daily Devotion

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. — 1 Corinthians 9:24

Daily devotional bible reading: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Athletes are the most perfect example of discipline. They prioritize hard work and self-discipline, making many sacrifices, being time-conscious, and being careful with their food in order to be successful in their careers. Sporting activities were popular in Paul’s time and in ours. The biennial Isthmian games, a celebration of athletic and musical competition in ancient Greece, are held in Corinth. This event is second to the Olympic games in terms of fame. Paul frequently used figures from arena competition, such as gladiators, fighters, chariot racers, and trophies. Paul may know the athletic metaphor applies to the Corinthians.

Paul reminds the Corinthian Christians that in a race, all the competitors compete for the same prize, but only one wins it. They must sprint in such a way that they will win the prize. Everyone who takes part in the games undergoes rigorous training. Athletes in Corinth practice self-discipline in order to get a perishable leaf wreath crown. They do it to get a temporary crown, but we do it to obtain a permanent crown (v. 24-26). As for all of us who believe in the gift of redemption through Jesus’ blood, we must discipline ourselves spiritually in order to receive a golden crown that will last forever. What is the best way for us to acquire this crown? As a result, Paul says, do not run aimlessly, and do not battle like a boxer punching the air. We are to strike a blow to our own bodies and enslave them (v. 26, 27). The way we spend our lives has consequences. Every day is a test of acceptance, a test of quieting ourselves and submitting to God’s will.

Let us maintain our gaze fixed on the prize that is eternal.
