Our scripture today is a very familiar passage. We see it on posters and other decors because of the encouragement it gives and the reminder we are safe with God who brings comfort. The word “walk” in the passage demonstrates continuous progress that feels very secure and is therefore completely calm and composed. It is not that easy to walk calm and serene in a day when you have a lot of things juggling in your mind such as the bills, a sick family member, finances, what people think, work, and many more, isn’t it?
When King David wrote the Psalm 23, he is not rejecting the fact that there will not be evil; he acknowledges it. However, even in his fear, he knows the wicked shadows were gone forever in God. He has the utmost confidence that God is taking away all wrongdoing from him. Our joy is the truth that God is with us. We can always have perfect security, for God is with us. He is for us and not against us.
Most, if not all, of our worries only exist in our mind. We are anxious about the things which do not even take place yet. The shadows of the valley are but shadows and cannot stop us from our path. We can smile, breathe, and love, taking one moment at a time, and trusting that in every moment, God is always with us.
Our joy is the truth that God is with us.
