Humbling Situations

Naturally, our tendency is really to think about our own interests. Even the meekest among us have a tendency to think too highly of ourselves. Even while serving God, there are temptations to exalt ourselves and boast of what we have done in the Kingdom of God.

Paul is not exempt from this temptation as well. Paul is a personal audience with Jesus, a participant in heavenly visions, a God-selected apostle, and a Bible author. In just a snap, it is easy to boast about His credentials.

2 Corinthians 12:7 MSG says, “Because of the extravagance of those revelations, and so I wouldn’t get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations. Satan’s angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees.” Paul pleaded God to take it away from him but God said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness (vv. 8-9).” Paul’s thorn in the flesh kept him humble and boast not of his credentials but about his weaknesses.
