Life is Unfair

Read Ecclesiastes 9:1-12 

Life is unfair. Were you able to find any encouragement from this statement? Ugly, but very true. This has been happening in the past and still continuously until the present age. The preacher of Ecclesiastes even wrote his honest observation that life is unfair. In Ecclesiastes 9:11, it says, “I also saw other things in this life that were not fair. The fastest runner does not always win the race; the strongest soldier does not always win the battle; wise people don’t always get the food; smart people don’t always get the wealth; educated people don’t always get the praise they deserve. When the time comes, bad things can happen to anyone!” 

What does this reality say to us and what can we do about this? 

We live in a broken world. We see injustice, selfishness, and hatred all around us. Without God in our life, what we can only do is to live according to whatever we can get out of our life here on earth. With God, however unfair life may seem, we can always see beauty out of it, we can always endure, we can always find peace, and we can even rejoice in it. Why? Because our hope, assurance, and confidence are not anchored in what the world can offer but to the one who has promised us eternal life and justice. We know that God is working all things together for the good of those who love him. 

Rather than feeling despair, even more that we should cling to God even though we do not see or understand what He is doing. We can trust God because His loving-kindnesses never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning. Great is God’s faithfulness!
