Live at Peace

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Romans 12:18

Read Romans 12:16-21

The phrase Paul used “if it is possible” at the start of our scripture today is very interesting. Perhaps Paul Himself knows very well that living at peace with the other people is not always possible. We have different beliefs, different culture, different opinions, and a lot of other dissimilarities. Paul implies that being at peace with our neighbor could not always be done, but it should be our primary desire. We are expected not to start the quarrel, instead we are to preserve the peace and pacify anger.

The feeling of anger is normal. It is an emotion we feel, and anger itself is not evil. However, our anger can lead us into doing something that is evil. Ephesians 4:26 says, “If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day.” We are responsible to our emotions and not the other way. A lot of times, after saying all hurtful words because of our anger, we suddenly realize what we’ve done and say, “I don’t mean everything I’ve said” or “I was just carried away by my emotions.” We are the master of our emotions and not the slave.

God knows even our emotions, also when there is injustice. Romans 12:19 says, “never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”” Instead we are to overcome evil with good and not the other way around (v. 21).

It is our choice to leave at peace with everyone.
