Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. — 1 Corinthians 12:31
Daily devotional bible reading: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31
What are the richer talents to which Paul refers? Paul says the manifestations of the Spirit are the message of wisdom, the word of knowledge and understanding, faith, gifts of healing, the working of miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. All these things [the gifts, the achievements, the abilities, the empowering] are brought about by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, distributing to each one individually just as He chooses (vv. 11 AMP).
The church is a group of people who share a common life, have been baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit, and worship the same God. More than a gathering of Christians who come together to enjoy personal gifts for their own glory, it is the body of Christ meant to work in unity and unselfish love. Each church member’s gifts come from the same Spirit, allowing everyone to work together to advance God’s Kingdom on earth.
God provides us the gifts through the Holy Spirit so we can serve one another in love for the greater glory of Christ. When we use our gifts wisely, we contribute to the growth of the church and the Kingdom of God. It produces damage and discord when used with the wrong attitude and motivation. The core aim of using our gifts should be to share love.
Desiring the spiritual gifts begins with a desire for God’s Word. Immerse yourself in the Bible and spend time in prayer with God. During your personal time, ask God to transform your heart into a fleshly heart that loves others. Pray that the Holy Spirit prepares your heart and enlightens your eyes to ways to love your neighbor.
In love, unite and encourage one another.
