Motives of the Heart - Daily Devotion

He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. — 1 Corinthians 4:5

Read 1 Corinthians 4:1-5

When disagreements over Christian preachers arose in Corinth, the Corinthians’ pride led them to pass judgment based on the appearance and preaching of their minister rather than the genuine work of the Spirit. Paul cautioned them that Jesus would reveal all they’d been keeping hidden, including their motives (v. 5).

We can get caught up in making our exterior look appealing and stunning while neglecting to pay attention to our internal appearance. Sad to say, we do the same thing as how we perceive others. God sees and perceives things that human sight cannot. He is aware of our past, our desires, our reasons, our thoughts, and everything else we strive to keep private. There isn’t a single human secret that God isn’t aware of. Before God, we are all held accountable.

John says in 1 John 1:8-10, if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Lord, I acknowledge that I am not in a position to pass judgment.
