Psalm 108 is a community lament which is most probably inspired by verses from two other Pslams. The first five verses are from Psalm 57:7-11 and the second half of the verses are from Psalm 60:5-12. Even though they are in the middle of a dangerous situation, the singers share their optimistic hope of thanking God among the peoples (v. 3).
David expresses confidence despite the hardships they are going through. The basis of his confidence is not their strength, skills, or advantage but the steadfast love and faithfulness of God. He knows that the love of God is great, higher than the heavens, and His faithfulness reaches the skies (v. 4) because he has experienced it personally. Noone can even grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ to mankind (Ephesians 3:18).
The mercy of God is greater than the highest mountain and earth cannot hold it all. His mercy is so vast, so boundless, so exceeding high even beyond the heavens. As the heavens above ark shed all the world, and as God’s grace from above sheds upon us, the only right response is to give thunders of praise and the loudest chorus to our God.
What is your song for God today?
I will give thanks to you, O LORD!
