Sin is A Matter of the Heart

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. —Psalm 51:4
In “New Morning Mercies” by Paul David Tripp, he shares with us that when we devalue sin, you also devalue the grace that alone can rescue you from sin. Sin is a matter of the heart—our thoughts, desires, motives, and choices of the heart. We express sins of the heart in the behavior of our body—your body physically goes where your heart has already gone. He further explains that every sin is a betrayal and an assault on the goodness of God. Every sin steals glory from God and denies His existence and power.
After David committed adultery and murder, he confessed to God with a contrite heart the core of his sinfulness: “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.” David knew that he needed to get right with the Lord. Our God loves us unconditionally and a contrite heart is the way back on the path to salvation. Our past does not define us, God defines us, and he loves us no matter what. God’s forgiveness is His love in action. Let us go and do the same…for ourselves and others.
Thank you, God, indeed the best is yet to come!
