The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. — Proverbs 12:18
Do the words we speak cause wounds or heal them? Proverbs 12:18 reminds us that our words can cut deeply when we speak out of anger or resentment, and do so rashly without thinking about what we are about to say.
Perhaps we’ve all had those moments when we snapped and said hurtful things to others. In our rage, we said things that broke our spouse’s heart. Out of resentment for them, we said things that harmed our relationships with our coworkers. We spoke words that crushed our children’s spirits because we were frustrated with them.
There is no excuse for using harsh language. Whatever the scenario, the key here is not to speak “rashly,” which means without thought. We can’t take our words back once we say them, therefore we should think about what we’re saying before saying it. It says in James 1:19, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” By remembering this scripture, we can speak in love and avoid broken relationships. Who are you healing today?
Let us always say what is true, what is right, and what will help others heal.
