The Blessing of God-Daily Devotions

“It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” - Genesis 32:30

Read Genesis 32:22-32

Jacob, like all of us, desires to be loved. His brother Esau is their father’s favored son. Perhaps Jacob wished to hear from his father that he adored him beyond everything else. To receive blessing from his father, Jacob did what her mother instructed and pretended to be Esau. Out of fear from his brother’s revenge because of his deception, he went to his uncle Laban in Haran. There, he fell in love with Rachel, Laban’s daughter. He worked for Laban for seven years, and in return, to be married to Rachel. At the time, he thought Rachel would be the one to fill the need in his life—the desire to be loved.

When Jacob fled Laban and returned to his hometown, where his brother Esau still lives, he prepared a plan to either appease Esau or escape if things didn’t go as planned. For many years, Jacob kept on relying on his plans and strength to find love and approval from others. We, like Jacob, are attempting to fill our emotional tanks with the fleeting goods that the world has to give. We arrange our lives without God, and when things don’t go as planned, we turn to God for help and deliverance.

Jacob was left alone, distressed since his reunion with Esau was approaching. When he was nothing to rely on, God met him and wrestled with him till sunrise. Jacob didn’t know who the man he’s wrestling with was at first, but two things helped him figure it out. First, when the man touched the socket of his hip, he wrenched it instantly. What kind of human being will have that kind of strength and power? And second, the man said he should let him go, for it was morning. No one will live if he sees God’s face. Then Jacob said he will not let go unless he blesses him. Finally, Jacob learned that what he should search for and hold so tight is the blessing of God. This kind of blessing is incomparable to his father, Laban, or Rachel’s blessing, is the blessing of God.

May we long for God’s blessing and not the temporary. May we rely on his strength and power and not our own.

There is no greater blessing than God’s love for us.
