"...One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it-it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her." - Luke 10:42 MSG
Read Luke 10:38-42
Luke 10:38-42 describes Martha as a woman that got into distraction. The article “The lost are of concentration: being distracted in the digital world” says that we check our phones every 12 minutes, often just after waking up. Always-on behaviour is harmful too long-term mental health, and we need to learn to the hit the pause button. This is very true. A lot of things can easily distract us, not only with our work or line of thoughts but also with our intimate relationship with Jesus.
We are sometimes so busy with different matter that we are already spending lesser and lesser time with Jesus. Perhaps the quarantine because of the pandemic is reminding us to slow down and refocus with God. Mary has chosen the good portion, and that is to have a close fellowship with the Lord. This kind of fellowship is her portion that will not be taken away from her. Let us not let anything interfere with our personal time with Jesus and with His Word, in prayer and worship.
What will you choose? The appetizer or the main course?
Let us choose the good portion.
