The Great Substitute Daily Devotion

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. -Romans 5:6

Read: Romans 5:1-11

One of the primary messages of the Bible is the concept of lordship. The Bible heavily emphasized lordship. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus Christ is addressed as Lord 622 times. The term “lord” refers to the person who is in charge, the one who makes the decisions.

Not only is Jesus Christ our Savior, but He is also our Lord. It is in our nature to make ourselves God’s substitute. We put ourselves in command of our lives, deciding without seeking God’s guidance. We have an underlying longing to be like gods and to have everything.

Despite our sinful desires, Jesus became a substitute for us. Jesus lived not as a king to be served, but as a humble and compassionate servant for us. He stepped into the role of the substitute, representing us. He didn’t lay down His life for Himself, but laid it down for us, His sheep. Jesus Christ serves as a substitute, standing in our place before God’s throne of justice. For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly (v. 6).

This is the depth of Jesus’s love for us. When it is difficult to love or forgive, let us remember Jesus became our great substitution to bring us closer to God.

He is our ultimate Substitute.
