The Heat Is On

There was a popular song in the 1980’s, “The heat is on” sung by Glenn Frey as part of the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. Fr Ed gave another wonderful homily asking us what we would do when the heat is on- when we are in the fiery furnace so to speak. Are we going to stand up to tyranny and injustice and be faithful to our God like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego?

The first mistake King Nebuchadnezzar did was to heat the furnace up to seven times the normal temperature. Seven is the perfect, complete number. The king’s servant saw 4 men unfettered and unhurt walking in the fire…the fourth looks like a son of God.

A humble and converted Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed: “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel to deliver the servants who trusted in him; disobeyed the royal command and yielded their bodies rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.”
