Trusting the Sleeping Jesus

The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” -Mark 4:38

Read Mark 4:35-41

Have you ever doubted if God truly cared about you when you were going through a difficult time? Sometimes it seems like God is not doing anything to help us in our situation. There are also instances when it seems like we have been waiting for so long for God to deliver us, and still there’s little to no progress at all.

When Jesus and His followers got on a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee, a violent squall blew up, and the waves smashed the boat to the point that it was being swamped. Andrew, Peter, James, and John are all skilled fishermen who used to fish on the same lake. They, too, were terrified and worried about dying in the storm. While all of this was going on, Jesus was sleeping on a cushion in the stern. The disciples woke Him and told Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down, and it was completely calm. Then He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:35-41).

When we are shaken by storms of trials and tribulation, we are all like the disciples. We’re so preoccupied with the approaching storm we’ve already forgotten that Jesus is with us in the boat. The disciples’ lack of faith bothered Jesus more than the storm. It’s very reasonable to be afraid and worried during a storm. However, how we deal with our fear can make a big impact. Trusting the sleeping Jesus, knowing that He cares and works for us even when it doesn’t seem like it, takes a lot of faith. But isn’t this is the kind of faith God wants us to have?

Jesus, help me fix my eyes on you while in a storm.
