So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! — 1 Corinthians 10:12
Daily devotional bible reading: 1 Corinthians 10:11-13
History contributes to the comprehension of people and society. It shows how people acted in the past. Paul used the history of Israel to warn the Corinthians. What the Israelites did that caused them to wander in the wilderness served as an example to discourage people from focusing their attention on terrible things in the present (vv. 6). When the Israelites left Egypt, some became idolaters, engaged in sexual immorality, complained, and put God to the test. Because of their actions, they received God’s wrath.
The repercussions that others have suffered as a result of their disobedience should serve as a warning to us. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! (vv. 12). We are not immune to the enemy’s nefarious schemes. We must be vigilant at all times, since the temptation to sin is all around us. Rather than relying on our own ability to resist sin, we should be more attentive and dependent on God. Our Lord promised He would be loyal and would not allow us to be tempted beyond our capacity. When we succumb to temptation, He will provide a way out so that we can persevere (vv. 13).
God’s faithfulness will keep us from sinning, but we have the freedom to make our own decisions thanks to our free will. Will you submit to God’s will?
God is trustworthy and faithful.
