Forty Days More And Nineveh Will Be Destroyed

He (God) repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; He did not carry it out.

Jonah 3:10

Jonah’s well-known disobedience to God attempting to avoid God’s commission earned him three days in the belly of a whale. Jonah was hard hearted and did not want the Ninevites, arch enemies, to experience God’s mercy. You could say once he was spat out of the whale’s belly onto shore, he went kicking and screaming to Ninevah. God did not reproach him for his disobedience or reluctance. He used Jonah the half-hearted messenger for His glory as his “deficient” preaching changed the people’s hearts.

The people repented, put on sackcloth and fasted as they changed their way of living and “turned away from their evil way.” As a result, God stayed his hand and they were not destroyed. This scripture verse is an invitation to change our lives and use God’s commandments and Gospel teachings of Jesus Christ as our moral compass. God uses all forms of “messengers” to speak truth all for His glory.

Repent, Reconcile, and Rejoice!
