Here I Am!

Speak for your servant is listening.

1 Samuel 3:10

Samuel’s consecration to the Lord was a result from God answering his mother’s plea for a child after years of barrenness. Thus, Samuel’s birth is viewed as a divine act of mercy for lifelong service in the temple for God. Imagine Samuel sleeping in the Lord’s temple ready to serve at a moment’s notice. Scripture reminds us that neither Samuel nor Eli, the priest, demonstrated annoyance at being woken up by Samuel’s perceived summons from Eli three separate times. Samuel is ready and willing to obey each summons, “Here I am, you called me” (v.5).

Eli finally realized it was the Lord calling Samuel and he prepares Samuel with the proper response. “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” At the fourth call, Samuel responds boldly to the Lord and the Lord establishes him as a prophet. A prophet speaks God’s truth building the kingdom of God.

I have come to do your will!
