I am the “Good Samaritan”

Today’s Daily Devotion

July 19, 2023

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

As I was traveling through Samaria in the occupied West Bank on Pentecost, I attended mass at The Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Taybeh. God brings people into your life for His glory. It is our “free will” to decide if we want to cultivate these relationships to build the kingdom of God. There, I met a couple who share in our mission to be empowered to live fully alive in mind, body, and spirit all for the glory of God.

As I mentioned that my ministry was taking me to Nazareth, they introduced me to retired Anglican Bishop Rhia. A week later, I was privileged to spend time with this “holy man” and read his book “Caught in Between”- the extraordinary story of an Arab Palestinian Christian Israeli.

In his final chapter, Bishop Rhia believes it is the saved man who was healed, told of his suffering, but also of the restoration of hope and good will ultimately prevail.

“The Samaritan acted out of a conviction that the man was worth the life God had given him. He simply helped to heal him; to give him the strength to stand again by himself. When the Palestinian people receive the help they need to stand by themselves again, they will not forget. They will share the experience with others. There is no mention of revenge in the story, only pain and fear and courage. We have yet to discover who will be our Good Samaritan. We continue to pray for him-and like the wounded man we may have to wait for a stranger, someone not of our own, to fill the role.”

After prayer and discernment, I messaged Bishop Rhia, “I am the Good Samaritan.”

But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him.
