Jesus teaches his disciples that forgiveness is a way of life through the parable of the debtor. The conversation begins with Peter asking Jesus, “Lord if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him”? As many as seven times?  Peter’s questions suggests that there should be

“I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times

a limit on forgiveness, especially repeated offenses.

Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. An honest look at ourselves might help us see the answer. How many times do we go to the Lord asking mercy for the same sins over and over? We certainly our glad that God will never tell us that we have reached our limit. He repeatedly forgives us and does not hold our sins against us. Just as the unforgiving servant in the parable, his entire debt was wiped out. Similarly, God has pardoned every sin we have ever committed and stands ready to pardon future sins after our repentance.  The standard of mercy is the Lord’s prayer: Forgive and you will be forgiven.

Forgive as I have forgiven you…
