Repentance

Today’s Daily Devotion – December 10 2022

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand! — Mathew 4:17

At a recent mass, Fr. Ed’s homily reminded me of John the Baptist. He strongly encouraged our repentance to take the form of renewal of mind, body, and spirit. He urged us to “really” reform and put on a new self. Often, we go through life on autopilot and are not actively deepening our love for Jesus Christ, self, or others. I often say the best gift you can give to another person is to walk with them on the path to salvation. We can walk the path with them but not for them.

Just as John the Baptist chastised the Pharisees and Sadducees, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance (VV 7-8). That is exactly the message that Fr. Ed was preaching- put your repentance into fruitful action. Let us all strengthen that vertical relationship with Jesus Christ. John the Baptist reminds us that Jesus Christ baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Come Holy Spirit, come!
