The Decalogue: The 10 Commandments

Then God delivered all these commandments.

Exodus 20:1

The 10 commandments were given to Moses by God and can be found in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. Although there is some slight differences from the Catholic and the Protestant versions, the commandments are God’s blessing out of love for His people. Here is the Catholic Version from the St. Joseph Edition of the The New American Bible:

  1. I, the Lord, am your God. You shall not have any gods besides me.
  2. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
  3. Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.
  4. Honor your father and your mother.
  5. You shall not kill.
  6. You shall not commit adultery.
  7. You shall not steal.
  8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
  10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.  -Exodus 20:2-17

God chastises those He loves.
