The Love of the Father!

If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1 John 2:15

God created the world for us to enjoy, right? So why is John saying that if we love the world that the love of the Father is not in him? The word love can be used to describe the love for our parents or spouse, but also our house and car. The word is the same, yet the sentiment could not be more different. In scripture, the Greek word “agape” describes the deep love of the Father and is used more than one hundred times in the New Testament. It describes the benevolent love that God has for his children and the love we are to offer to him and our neighbors in return.

John is reminding us that God created many good things for us to enjoy mindful that they do not replace the love of God in our hearts. When our contentment depends upon material comforts and success than on the eternal love of the Father, “the love of the Father is not in him.” Continue to nurture the divine exchange with our God and listen for his gentle voice that calls us back to his agape love.
