The Tax Collector Went Home A New Man

Today’s Daily Devotion – November 10 2022

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

O God be merciful to me a sinner. — Luke 18:13

Jesus addresses the Pharisee and tax collector parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness. The Temple was a place to encounter God and a holy location where God and His people gathered. Instead of speaking to God, the Pharisee prayed to himself boasting of his accomplishments. By focusing on his righteous acts, he was not really making himself present to God or inviting God to be present with him. The Pharisee missed the opportunity to encounter God and receive his mercy and grace. In essence, the Pharisee left the Temple in the same way he had entered.

The tax collector laid himself bare before God. He knew his failings and unworthiness and had no list of righteous acts to display to God. He opened his heart and begged for mercy. In that vulnerable and humble moment God and man came together in a real way. The tax collector went home a new man.

Open your heart and receive the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
