Trust in the Lord

Enough now! Stay your hand.

2 Samuel 24:16

King David started to doubt his military power and ordered a census throughout Judah and Israel. In Israel there were eight hundred thousand men fit for military service; in Judah five hundred thousand. Why did David regret ordering the census? David fell victim of not trusting in the Lord and to assess the strength of his kingdom, he ordered a census.

King David’s realized that he had forgotten that Israel’s true strength was in the Lord. Time and time again, God had given him victory even when vastly outnumbered. So David’s assessment of his people’s strength revealed a lack of trust in God their protector. Yes, the Lord punished the Israelites with a three day pestilence- the punishment chosen by King David.

In God’s infinite mercy, “when the angel causing this destruction stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord regretted the calamity and said to the angel, ‘Enough now! Stay your hand.’”

Lord, help me to rely on Your strength
rather than on human power or numbers.
