What Do You Prefer?

Today’s Daily Devotion – December 12 2022

What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

— 1 Corinthians 4:21 NIV

We can see from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians that they continued to reject his counsel. Some believers were filled with pride and followed Christ in their own way, not according to the word of God. They held themselves in too high a regard.

But Paul was like a father to the Corinthians. It’s up to them if they wanted Paul to come with a rod of discipline or with a loving attitude of tenderness to correct them. Paul would undoubtedly pick the latter. However, God might also decide to punish rebellious people by using Paul as a channel for His power.

Jesus leaves the ball in our court as well. The choice is ours if we will live in obedience or in rebellion. The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son (Hebrews 12:6). God loves us so much that he gives us the freedom on how to conduct our lives. He did not force us to love him or obey him because, if we do it out of force or fear, it is not love at all.

What do you prefer? Rod of discipline or a gentle, loving spirit?
