We Become God’s Children

Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.”

Hebrews 2:11

Hebrews 2:9-11 reminds us that in his passion and death, Jesus is pleased to have obtained familial status for us with God and proudly calls us his siblings. Through Jesus’ self-offering, through his willingness to be “made lower than the angels” and to taste death for everyone, God brings many children to glory. Through Christ’s death for us—which we enter into through baptism—God incorporates us into His divine family. We become children of God.

By accepting His suffering and death, Jesus, the author of life, transforms the bonds of death. Prior to and apart from Jesus, death is something all humanity endures as an experience that draws us away from God and one another. Because Christ suffered and died, death itself becomes a means to life, and through it we become siblings of the Son of God.

God proudly claims us as his children
