Make Your People Steadfast In Faith, O Lord.

On October 19, 2024 we celebrated the Memorial of Saints John de Brebeuf and Isaac Jogues, Priests and Companions, and Martyrs. This feast celebrates eight Jesuits-six priests and two lay associates who gave their lives while preaching Christ to the Huron natives of North America. Captured by the Iroquois, Isaac Jogues survived brutal tortures, including the mutilation of his fingers, before he escaped.
After receiving a hero’s welcome in France, he chose to return to the mission. “I would be glad if our Lord wished to complete the sacrifice where he began it,” he wrote to a fellow priest. “Pray that God unites me to himself inseparably.” Jogues was tomahawked to death in 1646 in what today is Auriesville, New York.
