A Caring Heart

Psalm 69 is an individual lament of David. He wrote this psalm to show to his people the ideal response when going through trials and suffering. In verse 21, David wrote, “They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.” Instead of help, David found cruelty.

Jesus also experienced the same thing on His way to the cross. It is written in Matthew 27:34, “they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.” The wine is mixed with gall, a bitter herb that could even be poisonous. Some say this is another form of mockery to Jesus. On the cross, Jesus said, “I thirst.” The soldiers put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth (John 19:29). All of this happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

In what ways can we help people going through trials or suffering? As believers, may we always have a caring heart for those in need. Spending time with them, comforting them, and praying for them are some of the simple ways we can help.

They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
Psalm 69:21

Lord, stir my heart whenever you open opportunities to be a helping hand for others.
