A Quiet Life

Today’s Daily Devotion

By Khai Samante

1 Thessalonians 4 is a part of a larger passage in which the apostle Paul is instructing the Thessalonians on how to live a life pleasing to God.

In our scripture today, Paul is encouraging the Thessalonians to aspire to live quietly. What does it mean to live quietly? The Greek word used here is “hesychazein,” which can be translated as “to be at rest,” “to be quiet,” or “to live calmly.” In other words, Paul is exhorting the Thessalonians to have an ambition to live peaceful and tranquil lives, free from the distractions and chaos that can often come with pursuing worldly ambitions.

When we live a quiet life, we can really take time and give the attention to listen to God and know Him better. Also, we will be more intentional in living peacefully with others, focusing on our own life and matters, instead of meddling in the lives of others. Rather than chasing after wealth, power, or status, the Bible encourages us to focus on the simple pleasures of life and on building a life centered around God’s will. God wants us to build lives that honor Him and bring us true fulfillment and joy.

But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

Aspire to live a peaceful, productive life.
