Be Watchful and Sober

Today’s Daily Devotion

May 4, 2023

By Khai Samante

When will Jesus return?

In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul reminds us that Christ’s second coming will be unexpected and sudden, like a thief in the night. As we wait on Jesus’ return, Paul encourages us to be watchful and sober, to put on the spiritual armor of faith, love, and hope, and to encourage and build up one another in our faith. He is urging us to stay vigilant and focused on our spiritual lives, rather than getting caught up in worldly distractions or temptations. Sober does not imply “humorless.” A sober person understands the right worth of things and, as a result, does not get overly excited about the things of this world.

Let us live in peace with one another and encourage one another, knowing that we have been saved through Jesus Christ and that we will one day be with Him forever. Our ultimate hope is in Christ and in the promise of eternal life.

But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
1 Thessalonians 5:8

Let’s live in a way that reflects this hope and brings glory to God.
