Forgiveness is Love in Action!

Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.

Luke 23:34

In the Lenten 2024 The Word Among Us, Father Mike Schmitz shares “What forgiveness is and isn’t.”  Forgiveness is at the top of what Christians are called to do. We know forgiveness is not easy, that is why Jesus proclaimed, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.”  First, Father Schmitz shares that forgiveness is not excusing what a person has done or pretending that it never happened. That is simply dishonest.

Forgiveness is not the same thing as forgetting or pretending to trust this person again. We are called to be wise and forgive without bringing someone proven untrustworthy back into our lives without them first demonstrating that they have earned your trust again. You can forgive without returning to a significant relationship with them again.

Forgiveness is a decision that begins with the acknowledging that the person who has hurt or offended you owes you something. They are in a sense “indebted” to you. Forgiveness is when you decide to release them from their debt and not “collect” on what they owe you. It is setting the other person free. Even if the person you are forgiving doesn’t think they’ve done anything wrong, forgive because God has commanded you to do so. When you forgive, you set yourself and hopefully the other person free.

Forgive so you shall be forgiven.
