God Delights in Abundance
They shall eat and there shall be some left over.
2 Kings 4:43
Elisha gives a foreshadowing of Jesus’ multiplication of loaves and fish when he instructs his servant to distribute the twenty barley loaves to one hundred people. He simply says twice: “give it to the people.” Elisha boldly proclaims, thus says the Lord, “They shall eat and there shall be some left over.” And when they had eaten, there was some left over, as the Lord had said (VV.43-44).
Today’s reading is one in a series of miraculous deeds that the Lord accomplished through Elisha– “a man of God.” Also in 2 Kings 4, God multiplied the poor widow’s oil, raised a child to life, neutralized poison in food, and cured a leper. Elisha worked zealously for the Lord as the Lord manifested his power through him reminding us that by our faith, we are co-heirs in building the kingdom of God.
