Granted To Achieve Israel’s Salvation

Today’s Daily Devotion

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

The valiant Judas and his brothers were greatly renowned in all of Israel and among all the Gentiles. By following God’s laws and decrees, God’s favor fell upon the Maccabees. The Lord God is looking, and he truly has compassion on us, as Moses declared in his canticle, when he protested openly with the words, and he will have pity on his servants (2 Maccabees 7:6). He never withdraws his mercy from us. Although he disciplines us with misfortunes, he does not abandon his people (2 Maccabees 6:16).

Recall how many times our Lord has reminded us to be still and know that I am God. The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still (Exodus 14:14). The battles is not yours, it is the Lords (2 Chronicles 20:15). This is precisely what the Maccabees used to motivate and encourage their warriors in battle. He urged his men not to fear the enemy, but mindful of the help they had received from heaven in the past, to expect that now, too, victory would be given to them by the Almighty. And by reminding them of the battles they had already won, he filled them with fresh enthusiasm (2 Maccabees 15:8-9). And the result: Judas and his men met the enemy with supplication and prayer, fighting with their hands and praying to God with their hearts they achieved a decisive victory rejoicing over the manifestations of God’s power (2 Maccabees 15:26-27).

For victory in war does not depend on the size of the army, but on the strength that comes from heaven.

Indeed, we serve a powerful God!
