“The Hammer”

Today’s Daily Devotion

August 13, 2023

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

The name Maccabees which probably means “hammer” refers to Judas, the third son of Mattathias and the first leader of the revolt against the Seleucid kings who persecuted the Jews. The author of this book is unknown but thought to be a Palestinian Jew recording the salvation of Israel which God worked through the family of Mattathias. The people of Israel have been specifically chosen by the one true God as his covenant-partner.

The Maccabee revolt to reclaim Jerusalem and Judea begins when Mattathias and his sons refuse to forsake the religion of their God. We will not obey the words nor depart from our religion in the slightest degree. What a powerful reminder that when the good and unafraid, evil has no stronghold. With God as their strength the Maccabees recaptured Jerusalem early in the revolt.

We will not obey the words of the king nor depart from our religion in the slightest degree.

Our strength comes from heaven
