Happy Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday

Today is Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a time of fasting and charity. St. Valentine’s Day has its roots in Catholicism and is associated with the feast day of St. Valentine, the patron saint of Terni, Italy. St Valentine was known for his devotion and concern for the poor, working miracles, and healing the sick.

In 1969, the Catholic church dropped St. Valentine’s Day from feast days due to its confusion over its origin. There are many legends of the origin of St. Valentine’s Day. One legend recounts the Rose of Reconciliation. Valentine overhead a young couple bickering and with his smiling face displaying the grace of tranquility, he held out a rose and asked the couple to receive it. He instructed them to grasp the stem carefully, as a couple, so as not to prick one another. With that, he taught the two to have “cor unum” (one heart), and their love returned as before.
