Holy Saturday: Were You There When They Laid Him in the Tomb?

The women returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils and rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

Luke 23:56

In The Little Black Book Passion according to St. Luke, only Joseph and some women disciples were there. It was a very small funeral. Then Holy Saturday- the longest day there ever was. The disciples were in shock. Jesus was dead and gone, and so were all their dreams. Nothing to do but wait till the Sabbath was over, then head back up north to Galilee without Jesus.

Little did they know, the next day would be spectacular. They would be struck mute by the cognitive dissonance of what they were to witness: the stone rolled away, the tomb empty with the appearance of a young angelic man dressed in a white robe who announced: “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.” The Easter Vigil commemorates and celebrates what this announcement conveys. Christ’s resurrection has changed the course of our souls as our Lord and Savior.

Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble…
