I Can Do Nothing

John 5:37 NIV Daily Devotion Scripture

By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. — John 5:30 NIV

By myself, I can do nothing. This truth serves as a great reminder that I can do nothing without God. This places me in a position to be humble before God and to rely on Him at all times. We are taught to be independent and self-sufficient, so we develop the belief that we should be able to do things on our own. Is it wrong to be independent and self-reliant? Well, the enemy can convince us that because we believe we can do things on our own, we are superior to God and no longer need Him.

John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Yes, without God, we can breathe and live. But We will not experience the fruitfulness and fullness of life without His presence. The scripture tells us to put off our old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of our minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22-24).

We openly admit through prayer that we can do nothing without Christ. It shifts us from a “I” mentality to putting our trust in God, making us grace-reliant rather than self-reliant.

Let’s be dependent to the grace of God!
