Israel: “One who struggles with God”

Today’s Daily Devotion

August 3, 2023

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

The verse refers to Jacob’s wrestling match with a mysterious man, which symbolizes his own spiritual needs and foreshadows the basic outlines of the gospel. The new name “Israel” is indicative of the new nature which has now come to its perfection of development in Jacob. The verse is also interpreted as Jacob prevailing with God in prayer and by faith getting the blessing.

Israel is the Hebrew name Yisra’el, meaning God contends, or one who struggles with God. Israel represents the relationship between God and His people. It signifies a union based on faith, obedience, and the acceptance of His covenant. Israel also embodies the spiritual battle between God’s kingdom and the forces of darkness, representing the ongoing struggle between good and evil.

Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have wrestled with God and with men and have prevailed.
Genesis 32:28

And by faith getting the blessing!
