Our Greatest Blessing

Today’s Daily Devotion – November 4 2022

By Khai Samante

Blessed is the people of whom this is true;
blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.

Psalm 144:15

I recall seeing people use the popular social hashtag “#blessed” on posts about their new branded shoes, designer bag, iPhone, new job opportunity, or career promotion. It’s great that people recognize they are blessed because of those things, but what exactly does “blessed” mean?

In the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, bles’-ed (barukh) can mean two things. If it is being referred to God such as “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel (1 Samuel 25:32)”, blessed has the sense of “praise.” But if it about human being in mind, it is used used in the sense of “happy” or “favored.” This can be frequently seen in the Psalms and the Gospels.

We can see throughout the Bible that those who have Jesus as their Lord and Savior are blessed. We are blessed, and the blessing we have is insignificant in comparison to new gadgets or other material possessions. The greatest and most secure blessing we have for all eternity is Jesus’ salvation and forgiveness of our sins. Our possessions, pride, and fame on this planet are all fleeting. They may be taken from us, but God remains with us forever. The peace, comfort, and guidance that God provides through the Holy Spirit are eternal blessings from God.
