Our Lives Are A Treasure

2 Corinthians 9:6

St. Lawrence (AD 225-258) was appointed as a deacon by Pope Sixtus II and condemned to death by Roman emperor Valerian, along with all bishops, priests, and deacons. It is said that the emperor offered to spare him if he would turn over all the wealth of the church as Lawerence was entrusted to manage the Church’s treasury.

Lawrence understood the church’s real treasury consisted in the lives of every believer. So instead of handing over the money to the emperor, he gave the money to the needy and presented to Valerian the “people” as the true treasures of the Church. It was a gutsy move that cost Lawrence his life. Lawrence teaches us to see our lives as treasures which are meant to be given away.
