Abraham and his nephew Lot became very successful herdsmen in livestock, silver, and gold. So successful in fact that they needed to split up as quarrels between the two groups were common. Abraham, gave Lot his choice of land in a peaceful gesture. Lot choice the fertile Jordan Plain pitching his tents near Sodom and Abraham stayed in the land of Canaan building an altar to the Lord in Hebron at the terebinth (oak tree) of Mamre where Abraham hosted the three visitors. After Lot left, the Lord said to Abram, “Look about you, and from where you are, gaze to the north, south, east and west; all that you see I will give to you and your descendants forever” (V:14).
Abraham understood that his relationship with Lot was more valuable than matters of real estate. Lot took the better parcel of land not factoring in the wickedness of the people living there. Yet Abraham trusted that God who had called him, would take care of him. This story invites us to ask ourselves: Are my possessions hindering the relationships that matter most? Relationships are worth more than possessions. Be like Abraham and value your relationships first, and trust God to take care of you.
Let there be no strife between you and me.
